Announcing CD-i Emulator version 0.5.3-beta6 for Windows
A new beta release of CD-i Emulator is now available from the Downloads
section of the CD-i Emulator website at https://www.cdiemu.org/downloads/.
Release notes can be found in the RELNOTES file; a summary is available
from the Release Notes section at https://www.cdiemu.org/relnotes/.
This is the sixth beta release for version 0.5.3. It is hugely out of date
with the current development version 0.6.0; the only reason for its release
is to get a working version available again.
The only major change is that emulation speed throttling has been fixed for
modern machines so games running at unplayable speeds should be a thing
of the past.
Note to would-be crackers of this version (you know who you are):
I really would prefer it if you didn't. There is really no need!
As with all previous beta versions, using a Mono-I CD-i system ROM
(also called BIOS) will give you unlimited emulation functionality;
this is the same ROM file needed for the MESS/MAME CD-i driver.
This beta version also has the NVRAM save functionality enabled,
and before the built-in beta date limit expires a new beta release
for version 0.6.0 should be available.
To obtain unlimited emulation functionality with a different CD-i
system ROM file, please buy the unlimited edition of version 0.5.2
which is still available at https://www.cdiemu.org/payments/.
Activating the unlimited edition on your machine will also unlock
the unlimited emulation functionality of this beta version.

What I call "proof of concept" DVC support has been in CD-i Emulator since 2010 or so. It already works well enough to run The 7th Guest and a number of other titles, but only for a specific version of the DVC cartridge (the so-called "Gate Array" version, GMPEG for short). Getting it to run on the other versions (VMPEG and IMPEG) is just a matter of bugfixing, the basic emulation for those versions is there already as they are architecturally very similar. But before that is going to happen I want to fix the issues with the current MPEG emulation which are mostly a question of emulation architecture (exact issues are technical and I won't go into them right now).

i downloaded your demo beta bud the only game that works is hotel mario for me.
my favorite game othello keeps working until you make a wrong move.
when you make a wrong move the game is freezing.
the 7 quest ask for a digital cardridge.
I also have a problem that only one bios works and that is the cd-i 220 bios, others just don't work.
Probaply i do somthing wrong ? are there people who get the emulator at work whit a cd-i 490 bios?

Also overhere I get the message for the Digital Video Cartridge for the 7th guest. Do you have to make a rom dump of the DVC? If so, how do you do that?

i don't think so bud i'm not sure about this.
if you look in the rom folder file of the emulator from cdifan there's a xmpegx.rom file present. that should do the job.
but it hasn't worked for me for years to play a dvc title. But no emulator does that yet.
in that respect it remains a unique device the CD-i player itself even now in the year 2023 no one has yet managed to play DVC titles from CD-i on an emulator.
that would make cd-i fan's emulator unique!
Do you also have the problem that with every cd-i title the emulator of cdifan freezes when you click a few too many mouse clicks? e.g. othello ?
if you want a good and stable free cd-i emulator (no DVC ofcourse ) use retroarch it works super!!

xmpegx.rom is just a dummy file to enable the extra memory - it is not the ROM of a Digital Video Cartridge.
If you dump it properly -either via null-modem cable and cdilink or by reading the (EP)ROM with a programmer- then you can also enjoy DVC titles in CD-i Emulator.

Just checked the documentation of cdilink and indeed it dumps all roms even the one from the Digital Video Cartridge. I have to check what I did wrong few years ago - probably only took the system rom and ignored the other output 🙄

No, I don't have that problem. Stability seems fine when playing Lemmings. I don't have Othello, so can't give feedback about that title.
RetroArch on my MacBook has in my first opinion better video quality (uses almost full screen, you don't see "lines") then cdiemu on Windows (smaller, impression you see the picture lines).

I added the DVC rom and DVC titles (7th guest and the Philips Encyclopedia) are playing - however it seems I have a VMPEG version and playback is quite unstable (as expected).
do you want to share this vmpeg file with me?
I don't have a link cable or a serial port on my modern PC.
wonder why cdifan who makes the emulator didn't include this file vmpeg in his program.
maybe because it has bugs and doesn't work perfectly but it does show the development and possibilities of the progress of the emulator.
maybe in a few years someone can create a fully working cd-i emulator with vdc.

here you can download all cd-i titles and burn it on a cd or use the iso for the emulator
hope you want to try othello for the freezing test.
for me: it freezes on the cdifan emulator not on the retroarch simulator
Hi! I can run Crature shock with cdi220b.rom and gmpega2.rom.
But Thunder in paradise, while shows correctly the intro video, gets stuck after the controller selection screen.
I also tested an iso labeled as prototype, and it pass that screen, but crashes randomly.
Any clue?
