CD-I Cases, which came first or why?

So aside from the standard CD cases, I have found 4 variations of CD-I Cases
There is the Black Plastic versions, using brittle transparent plastic (which I'm sure most everyone has had to repair with sticky tape) with either the CD-I logo or the CD-i with the dot in the middle of the C.
Then there is the Grey Plastic versions with the more durable translucent plastic with the circular indent, or the rectangular indent.
Did they do the more durable one first but decide it didn't look as good on the shelf? Or did they do the Brittle one first then realised it broke, did they use different ones for different types of software?
Comptons for example is in a black case with the non dotted logo, but the printed inlay has the dotted logo.
