The World of CD-i

Category Archives: News

Credits and Watermarks

At The World of CD-i, we don’t post news very often, we are more dedicated to complete the database of all CD-i titles ever published.
But when we talk about something, we try to dig at the maximum, even if, when it comes on-line, the information is already known from other places.

To give an example, when we write a review about a title (known or unknown), we try it in all ways possible. We play it with and without a Digital Video Cartridge, with and without a 2 player splitter, in different CD-i player models, we also test the CD-i emulator compatibility, we try to find bugs and we check the memory space used in the NVRAM… and it takes time…
We also take, edit and rework numerous screenshots, scans and now also making our own videos.

You will always see the name of the title’s owner or contributor in our database. If no name is shown, then it is because the title is owned by one of us (team).

Write an articles takes time to confirm facts, to ask permissions to include pictures and documents. Same thing for hardware repairs and development. We don’t just quote other people who have done this work and just add some personal opinions (this is the easy way).

Of course, we publish on this site and so, on the internet. But being on internet do not means it do not have an owner.
The CD-i needs to be shared, but when shared or just quoted, it has to be credited, and not copied then published with previous dates to avoid any credits ( we saw it many times unfortunately).

Talking about quotes, it is important to remember when you quote someone from different parts of a discussion, it can be stay out of context and this is a form of how a fake news can born.

I asked personally to some people to do not quote me (omegalfa) as I am not in search of any kind of fame or glory, and also don’t want to be related with some websites/blogs, but unfortunately, it has not been respected.
We have also seen very often our real names being shown. We use usernames for a reason… please respect that.

That is why, even if known from everyone, we now publicly ask to anyone who copy/paste our text and/or use our pictures, to always add a direct link to www.theworldofcdi.com and to not credit it to a specific person but to The World of CD-i.

All the pictures that are watermarked, must be used as it is, with the watermarks, for the reasons described before.
We do not tolerate any watermark removal or hiding.

IF YOU DISLIKE THE WATERMARKS, JUST DON’T USE THE PICTURES.

And talking about watermarks, we have to be clear about this point:
When we re-opened The World of CD-i website, we was watermark free, but after seeing many times our pictures shared without credits, we decided to add this feature.

Many people also choose us to share pictures of titles, collections and information on our Forum, Facebook Support Group or Twitter, but once again, the credits goes to the person who shared it and do not include the place where it as been shared.

To conclude, at The World of CD-i, we are 7 people, you can know who they are on the contacts page, and even if I use to be the front-man, we work as a TEAM. Each one of us have a specific work here.
When I decided to relaunch the site, I asked to each one of them to join me in this journey. I can’t and will not tolerate a disrespect of there work, which includes many late long nights working on the information you can now read on this site.

Thank you.

Digital Video Cartridge bottle opener and key-chain

MrData, posted on the Original CD-i Discord Server this picture!
He worked with one of his friends to create this absolutely gorgeous bottle opener and key-chain.
This is the image of the Digital Video Cartridge (DVC) logo used by Philips on many of the CD-i titles who required a player equipped with a DVC module to be able to play Full Motion Video games/movies or titles that required it.

You want one? Sorry…
Only 2 of them have been made by his creator, and the lucky owners are MrData and me (Merci beaucoup Monsieur Data).

To reach this final result, the original DVC logo (provided by Jorne / Mrii6 from the same server) to be worked digitally to get a better quality. It has been completely vectorized using affinity designer software and the final result is just wonderful! MrData, you can congratulate your friend!

Most of the DVC titles have this logo on the box.

Professional designers will of course find some differences from the original one, but come on… who cares?
It is an amazing detailed quality picture, required for the final application. Using a lower quality one on a printable object will result  in a even lower final result quality.

Future possible prints? Who knows… for now, as said before, only 2 have been made. His creator doesn’t seams to be interested in selling as he just made them for fun.
I am waiting to receive mine and will post it on the site (forum) as soon as I put my hands on!

Discord CD-i Server

Who never heard of Discord? It is commonly used in the gaming communities, and now, the CD-i also have a dedicated place on it.
Randam Hajile created the server and Dopply made the rest of the job.

We have been invited directly by Dopply to join it.
As all other CD-i sites are represented there, we found normal to also be there to give a 24/7 support for all our already members and other people (CD-i lovers or not).

Join the Discord CD-i room right now!

Back in 2005, on Le Monde du CD-i, we already had a live 24/7 chat based on mIRC embed on the site and we meet a lot of people. Some of them are now on this new Discord server. At that time some people used to say it was a nonsense place… but it seams we was a little bit ahead… or others was a little bit against…

This Discord server is an independent place, not related to any other websites.

Discworld on CD-i fully playable

This information comes directly from our Facebook Group member Roberth Rivero who posts this news about a YouTuber called Manmonkee. Manmonkee talks about Discworld game, under various formats, including CD-i:

A YouTuber called Manmonkee dropped a bomb of a comment a month ago revealing something truly unexpected…It seems that Atari approached Perfect 10 Productions/Teeny Weeny Games (where Manmonkee worked) in order to port Discworld to the Jaguar CD, which never moved foward beyond the discussional phase via phone. Damn, we lost a good one…But you may be wondering what does this has to do with the CD-i? Well here’s the real kicker: Manmonkee confirmed to me that the CD-i version of Discworld was not only finished but fully playable as well. So there you have it CD-i fans, you lost a good title as well 🙁

I am glad to see that our return has shaken the community!

Here is Manmonkee’s YouTube video:

Dodge training title for employees

This double disc professional title poped-up on ebay this week for the insane price of 10,000$. Yes, it is true, no extra zeros on it…

This is one of the reasons, some unknown titles will never be tested or preserved. This is pure speculation get the bigger profit as possible.

You will tell me, everyone can sell to the price he wants, he owns the title, he decide what to do. Look at me for example… I want to go to Japan with my family for 50€ each… one thing is what I want, and one thing is what is real.

If having a complete CD-i collection is already difficult due to the incredibly large variety of titles, with prices like this, or even with prices around the 500$ and 1000$, maybe it isn’t bad idea to just look at the pictures on the internet…

Sorry about that, it is just me talking to myself…

Let’s go back to the business, 1997 Dodge Product Preview. We are talking about double CD used by Dodge for the sellers training, just many other companies did on CD-i.

Videos was shown and the employees had to answer questions.

After completing it, each employee get points. Those points was stored under their profiles stored in the CD-i player memory, this way, he could try to get a better scoring.

Dodge employees learn more about the 1997 Dodge cars, caravans and engineering  features on disc 1, and about trucks on disc 2.

It is about the 1997 Dodge world, but it has been made in 1996 by Chrysler Interactive Training.

Finally, thank you Sixtersfan105 for letting us know about it on ebay, and thank you to all preservationists that, I hope will never let us down, even with prices like this one…

Happy MAR10 Day!

Today is MAR10 Day!

What the hell are you saying Omegalfa? Mario day? Why today and not yesterday or tomorrow?

Easy answer…. today is March, day 10th.

Write the beginning of Mario and end it with the number of the month’s day, 10. You will get MAR10 = MARIO, so all March 10th, are Mario’s Day! 😛

To celebrate this day I can resist in sharing this great review from my friend Flbond who wrote an amazing read on The Well Red Mage website.

Do not miss this read and Happy MAR10 day!

International Collector’s Trust & Help!

Back in December 2020, Blazers and Seventy7 contacted me about a Portuguese guy selling his little but good collection. I was already aware about this sell, but as I already owned all the titles, I let it go (available since September).

I sent to Blazers a picture with this Arte Rupestre do Vale do Côa and the Iberoamerica set, and of course, he thought I jumped into this before him to buy them. No no no… I am not this kind of person…

I already owned them since a few years but never shown them before (I only recently shown a little part of my collection).

Blazers and Seventy7 asked me if I could make the deal come true:
I was going to buy it here in Portugal, verify the material conditions, and then, send it to overseas.

It took some weeks until I reached a deal with the seller about the price and custom costs, but everything gone right.

I had to repair some stuff including a gamepad with broken contacts.
A few weeks later Seventy7 received the package in safety.

I asked nothing in return, they needed help to get some stuff, I was available and made it come true.

I even added 6 Video-CD’s as gift from my personal collection.

I am really happy for them and I can’t forget the good things they are doing for our community and the preference they give to The World of CD-i.

Thank you guys!

Japanese Karaoke set from 1992 until 1999!

Blazers posted on our Forum a topic related to the 172 titles from a Japanese Karaoke collection he owns…
When we added all of them, one by one, we noticed that but didn’t talk about…
The point is, with a number of 172 titles from a single collection (at least the known ones), it is extremely difficult to publish them in only 1 year. In fact, we can definitely say it is the longest collection of a single collection for the CD-i than goes from 1992 until 1999.
More impressive is the fact the layout is always the same. Same letter type, letter size, color, using the same template along 7 years. Even with a change in the Publisher and Producer during the lifetime, you can definitely confirm by yourself this. Just look at the first and last disc printed (at the top of this article).

Even if the CD-i didn’t succeed in Japan, far from it… Karaoke was and still is one of the most popular entertainment for the Japanese community. Formats like CD Graphics (CD+G), CD-i, Video-CD, all supported by the Philips CD-i system.

You can view all of the 172 titles, listed here.

All scans done by Seventy7 from Preserve CD-i.
