#CDiDay on Twitter

Our member and Live Streamer CDiArcade started in March of this year on Twitter an exciting project!
It’s called #CDiDay and the objective of it is very simple but also very pertinent…
Every Friday, he tweets CD-i related messages with or without pictures adding every time the hashtag #CDiDay.
In April (a few weeks after the site opening) we got a nice chat together and he invited me to help him in his honourable quest.
I am now proudly inviting you to do the same if you have a Twitter account.

Every Friday, tweet a CD-i related message using hashtag #CDiDay. More than once a day if possible!

The more people will see it, the more about CD-i they will talk on Twitter!
With some luck, your followers will retweet them. It is a good way to spread the good word over the net and who knows… call the attention of game journalists or other retro specialists.

It’s in your hands now to help us! Long life to #CDiDay!

You can find and follow me on Twitter under @omegalfapt.

1st Basque Country CD-i Philips Tournament 2023 – Results

1st Basque Country CD-i Philips Tournament 2023

(All text by Egoitz Campo)
Last Saturday, 11th of February, Euskal Retro Association organized the 1st Basque Country CD-i Philips Tournament. After buying the console more than a month ago, we thought of organizing a tournament so that there would be an extra incentive to play this console. In addition, the people of The World CD-i told us that they could publish the news on their official website and even create a High Score with our results and with those of other CD-i fans around the world. That definitely motivated us a lot.

We met at 4:30 p.m. at Bar Jofer in Santutxu (Bilbao – Basque Country). Initially, the idea was to meet at the Bar Azteka, but we had to change places because the owner closed the bar that afternoon. First we played another great console, Atari 2600 and then at 18:00 we played the Philips CD-i, a very interesting interactive console. We played four games: Ms Pac-Man (Arcade Classics), Escape from CyberCity, Video Speedway, and Mystic Midway. 8 players in total.
The afternoon was entertaining and people liked the console. For example, it was very difficult for them to play Escape from Cybercity, and for good reason because it is an extremely difficult and fast game. If you don’t have great reflexes, you’re dead right away. Instead, they all enjoyed as children playing Ms Pac-Man (a classic arcade game), Speedway (the best car game from Philips, interesting driving game) and Mystic Midway (great game of shooting skulls and other kind of things that are very scary).
We played Ms Pac-Man in hard mode until they ate us for the first time. In Speedway; we played the training and the race of Verona, and we wrote down the time that each player needed to take the first lap of the race. In Escape from Cybercity we played in rookie mode, and we recorded the points that each player got before they were killed; and in Mystic Midway the final score that each player got in a single attempt.
The tournament was won by Egoitz, although we must remember that the previous week he was practicing at home to be able to win this first Basque Championship. Our intention is to continue organizing tournaments, the Basque Country Tournament twice a year and also that our basque friends and players can participate in the rankings (also our friend Alex, the Nicaraguan, of course). In August, we will do the second tournament.

Here we leave you the results (In parentheses the points obtained):

Ms Pac-Man
1- Jesus Carballeira 6 points (9.160)
2- Samuel Otero 5 points (6.580)
3- Gorka Pérez 4 points (3.950)
4- Egoitz Campo 3 points (2.450)
5- Lander Campo 2 points (2.420)

5- Jon Ander Gíl 2 points (350)
6- Daniel Barrientos 1 point (140)

Classification of the 1st Basque Country CD-i Philips Tournament 2023
1- Egoitz Campo 19 points (Basque Country)
2- Jesus Carballeira 15 points (Basque Country)
3- Samuel Otero 15 points (Basque Country)
4- Daniel Barrientos 8 points (Basque Country)
5- Alex Martínez 6 points (Nicaragua)
6- Gorka Pérez 5 points (Basque Country)
7- Lander Campo 4 points (Basque Country)

Congratulations for this initiative!
We hope it can push other people from around the world to do the same!

5th Chronicle – Timekeeper Substituition

What is a Timekeeper?

The Timekeeper is the CD-i NVRAM chip. It will keep the settings, time and date of your player and the saved games (storage). Hidden inside the chip, a little lithium battery is placed with a longevity up to 10 years or more if the player is stocked in optimal conditions (temperature, humidity).
This is not the place where they are stored, this it just the mechanism to keep them recorded, just like a lithium battery keep the BIOS setup in a computer.

This is official from ASSEMbler’s team in this post:
https://assemblergames.com/threads/this-forum-to-close-in-30-days.71032

You can read from the Admin:

Current account status -$2880 ($120 x 24 months)
It cannot continue at such a loss.
Thank you for being companions for 23 years journey.
-ASSEMbler

ASSEMbler Games is the place that get the very first information about Mario Takes America for CD-i!
https://assemblergames.com/threads/mario-takes-america-phillips-cd-i.12062

It is more than just CD-i, this a place that helped people to develop all kind of game’s systems, selling stuff and so much more… A major lost for internet and gaming lovers! ;(

It is in fact a little bit stranger for a forum to be so expensive… $120 each months…?
I do believe there is lower prices for the objective of the forums.

If nobody buy the forum or if no money is found to pay the bills, then the last breath will be Saterday 29th of 2019…

CD Graphics – A forgotten format

I am an Alphaville fan, this is known from everyone. As they do have a CD Graphics (CD+G) album called Alphaville – The Breathtaking Blue, this format is for me very precious for me.

There is another person with the same felling about the CD+G discs, I am talking about Orlando Arroyo, his name may not be familiar to you as it should be.
I meet Orlando back in 2004, when he was in search of all CD-G discs. This is when Le Monde du CD-i (now The World of CD-i) started to include all the collection in the data base.
Orlando Arroyo and his friend Steve Martin decided to create a website that include all CD+G discs ever created, the CD Graphics Museum, with videos (also available on there YouTube channel), screenshots and disc information.

You really should take a moment and visit this real museum dedicated to this forgotten CD format.

Orlando shared with us on our Facebook Support Group an historic picture from a magazine he can’t remember the name. You can see this picture at the top of this article.
This is a timeline that goes from 1877 until 1991, more than 100 years, and the Philips CD-i is the start that everyone is awaiting!

The CD-Graphics was a very expected format in the early 90’s, music album with pictures on screen that can play on any Audio-CD or CD+G player, with text appearing on screen to sing along. The Karaoke discs was about to born!
Philips couldn’t left this CD format out of the CD-i player and extend the wide list of compatibility that this interactive system offer.

Thank you Orlando! Thank you to preserve this format for future generations!

CD-i emulation

Emulation is the term used when you want to make something work from a specific system, using something that is not the original platform.
In our case, play a CD-i title without the need of any dedicated player.

This quest isn’t new. Back to the early days of the interactive system development, Philips tried many ways to emulate CD-i titles to make it easier to develop new titles.

Find out all the different ways to emulate a CD-i title using a software.
Some of them are abandoned by their creator, others are still under development.
