Chronicle #30: NFL – Instant Replay

The World of CD-i Chronicles #30

NFL – Instant Replay

I am going to review a game not well-known by many of you, especially if you are from Europe called NFL – Instant Replay.
I want to thank you Seventy7 (our website member) for sending me a copy of this title.
NFL means National Football League, but you might know in other-seas, football is in fact American Football… our football, in Europe, is Soccer in USA… Are you still with me…?
I am not a big fan of NFL, to be true, I only knew what is a Touchdown… but after playing this game, believe me, I know much better this fighting game… I mean… this sport game…! 😉

SOME HISTORY:
Produced by CapDisc and published by Philips Media of America (PIMA) in 1995, this is game is licensed by NFL, one of the most famous sports in the USA. CapDisc is also responsible for games like Mad Dog McCree™ and many other games available on CD-i.

Chronicle #8 – Alien Gate – Review

Chronicle #8

With my job and the Covid-19 who took the whole week, I had to make a last minute chronicle!
Oh damn! What the hell?! Hell? Yeah! Hell!  Let’s talk about Alien Gate!

SOME HISTORY:
This is not my favourite game, by far, but there is some very cool graphics on it. When Philips was still balancing between the family multimedia player and the gaming introduction, SPC Vision came with a demo of this game and Philips loved it! Very worked graphics for the early 90’s.
This is how Alien Gate came to the Philips CD-i, from a scratch demo made by a new programmer that became a SPC Vision employee.

Chronicle #9 – The World of CD-i History!

The World of CD-i Chronicle #9

The website celebrate April’s Fools Days 1 year after we came back. But the story is longer than that… let’s have a look together!

Officially launched on the 13th of March 2003, the first ideas dated from 1997, six years earlier. Unfortunately without any computer to create the website, Omegalfa (Portugal) kept all CD-i related stuff over the years and later near the fall of December 2002 started to code the 1st version of the Le Monde du CD-i website…

Chronicles #2 – Find the best CD-i controller!

Hey guys, this is Omegalfa from The World of CD-i for the 2nd Chronicle!

Now that we have a better knowledge to choose a CD-i player, let’s get a good controller!
You have for sure heard about the remote controllers that comes with a CD-i player:

“Very difficult to play with!”
“Who is the crazy guy who designed this?”
“It is supposed to play games with this?”

In fact, the remote controllers that came with a CD-i player was a little bit difficult to use for gaming, but keep in mind a very important thing, the CD-i wasn’t supposed to be a gaming console but a familial system, where you could watch a movie, check an encyclopaedia, listen music, play games and I pass many other possibilities…
So the main objective of the remote control was to simply move the cursor and click using a button.

Chronicles #3 – The different CD-i cases formats

Since the launch of the CD-i back in 1991 in the United States of America and in 1992 in Europe, many CD-i cases formats have been designed by Philips Media. For collectors, it is an important subject do have a complete collection of one or other format or even both. So let’s take a look at them!

Chronicles #4 – Catalogue Country Code

The World of CD-i Chronicles #4

This chronicle will be a little bit shorter than the others, but not less important, especially when you are a real collector.
We are today going to discuss the reason of a CD-i title being the way it is…
Many of you asked me, how to define an USA or other country releases.

First of all it is important to remember that as a multinational company, Philips, using “Philips Media” label publisher was in different countries, so you will find “Philips Interactive Media of America” (PIMA) for USA releases, “Philips Media Iberica” for Portugal and Spain, “Philips Media France”, “Philips Media Italia”, etc…
Each of them will publish regional titles with Philips consent. Doing this, each titles published will get a catalogue number, and each catalogue number will get a regional number, so all titles will be easily recognized.

To be more clear and specific about this, here is what you need to do if you want to purchase titles from an unique country/language or more than one country.

Console Purist Chronicles

I have been invited by Stacy Burns, owner of one of the biggest Facebook groups called Console Purist, also member of The World of CD-i, under the username of Benaiah.
He needed to fill a void on his Facebook group about CD-i information, and I am so glad he turns to me to take this challenge. I am really exited to show to the world this underrated system, loved by ones and hated by others. Part of the people that does not love it have been influenced by crappy YouTube videos and other jokes when they most of them didn’t even tried once to play a CD-i title.

I am posting every Friday, to follow the #CDiDay Twitter movement, and this way improve in a higher level the divulgation in the same day of CD-i related information. You will find reviews, repairs, opinions, and other kind of stuff all write by myself, Omegalfa.
Each chronicle will get a topic on the our forum community, so you will be able to contribute with your opinions.
I am also adding in this section all the chronicles I will post there. A new Top Menu link called “Console Purist Chronicles” have been added to find all the posts, so take a good seat and have a good reading!

What about create your own Photo-CD?
Marco Parisio Java from Philips CD-i Appreciation Group (Facebook) found this free software:
Kodak Arrange and Built-it
Compatible with Mac and Windows, and also playable on CD-i of course.

I will try it and if everything goes well, I will create a guide to use it.

Credits and Watermarks

At The World of CD-i, we don’t post news very often, we are more dedicated to complete the database of all CD-i titles ever published.
But when we talk about something, we try to dig at the maximum, even if, when it comes on-line, the information is already known from other places.

To give an example, when we write a review about a title (known or unknown), we try it in all ways possible. We play it with and without a Digital Video Cartridge, with and without a 2 player splitter, in different CD-i player models, we also test the CD-i emulator compatibility, we try to find bugs and we check the memory space used in the NVRAM… and it takes time…
We also take, edit and rework numerous screenshots, scans and now also making our own videos.

You will always see the name of the title’s owner or contributor in our database. If no name is shown, then it is because the title is owned by one of us (team).

Write an articles takes time to confirm facts, to ask permissions to include pictures and documents. Same thing for hardware repairs and development. We don’t just quote other people who have done this work and just add some personal opinions (this is the easy way).

Of course, we publish on this site and so, on the internet. But being on internet do not means it do not have an owner.
The CD-i needs to be shared, but when shared or just quoted, it has to be credited, and not copied then published with previous dates to avoid any credits ( we saw it many times unfortunately).

Talking about quotes, it is important to remember when you quote someone from different parts of a discussion, it can be stay out of context and this is a form of how a fake news can born.

I asked personally to some people to do not quote me (omegalfa) as I am not in search of any kind of fame or glory, and also don’t want to be related with some websites/blogs, but unfortunately, it has not been respected.
We have also seen very often our real names being shown. We use usernames for a reason… please respect that.

That is why, even if known from everyone, we now publicly ask to anyone who copy/paste our text and/or use our pictures, to always add a direct link to www.theworldofcdi.com and to not credit it to a specific person but to The World of CD-i.

All the pictures that are watermarked, must be used as it is, with the watermarks, for the reasons described before.
We do not tolerate any watermark removal or hiding.

IF YOU DISLIKE THE WATERMARKS, JUST DON’T USE THE PICTURES.

And talking about watermarks, we have to be clear about this point:
When we re-opened The World of CD-i website, we was watermark free, but after seeing many times our pictures shared without credits, we decided to add this feature.

Many people also choose us to share pictures of titles, collections and information on our Forum, Facebook Support Group or Twitter, but once again, the credits goes to the person who shared it and do not include the place where it as been shared.

To conclude, at The World of CD-i, we are 7 people, you can know who they are on the contacts page, and even if I use to be the front-man, we work as a TEAM. Each one of us have a specific work here.
When I decided to relaunch the site, I asked to each one of them to join me in this journey. I can’t and will not tolerate a disrespect of there work, which includes many late long nights working on the information you can now read on this site.

Thank you.

Digital Video Cartridge bottle opener and key-chain

MrData, posted on the Original CD-i Discord Server this picture!
He worked with one of his friends to create this absolutely gorgeous bottle opener and key-chain.
This is the image of the Digital Video Cartridge (DVC) logo used by Philips on many of the CD-i titles who required a player equipped with a DVC module to be able to play Full Motion Video games/movies or titles that required it.

You want one? Sorry…
Only 2 of them have been made by his creator, and the lucky owners are MrData and me (Merci beaucoup Monsieur Data).

To reach this final result, the original DVC logo (provided by Jorne / Mrii6 from the same server) to be worked digitally to get a better quality. It has been completely vectorized using affinity designer software and the final result is just wonderful! MrData, you can congratulate your friend!

Most of the DVC titles have this logo on the box.

Professional designers will of course find some differences from the original one, but come on… who cares?
It is an amazing detailed quality picture, required for the final application. Using a lower quality one on a printable object will result  in a even lower final result quality.

Future possible prints? Who knows… for now, as said before, only 2 have been made. His creator doesn’t seams to be interested in selling as he just made them for fun.
I am waiting to receive mine and will post it on the site (forum) as soon as I put my hands on!
